One day in Dr. Jennifer Laurence's lab at the University of Kansas, a liquid that was supposed to turn clear turned orange instead. She quickly realized she had something potentially big on her hands. 

Cancer in KC: Ellis Fischel and the history of cancer care in Missouri 

In the Midwest, a major part of cancer’s history is Ellis Fischel Cancer Center in Columbia, Missouri. As the first freestanding cancer hospital west of the Mississippi River, it was built to serve patients from rural parts of the state who couldn’t afford to pay for care. 

Me, getting by: LaJua Manning 

LaJua Manning is a single mom who is involved with Stand Up KC, a group that protests for higher pay for low wage workers. As a certified nursing assistant, LaJua works overnight to take care of bedridden patients. Yet, she still struggles to get by.
